World Hunger: A Global Phenomenon

A picture speaks a thousand words. Take a look at the picture above? What do you think? Is it true? Well, it is definitely something to be pondered upon by each and everyone of us. The picture has something to do with what I'm going to talk about. World hunger and famine.

Do you guys know what famine is? Basically it means, scarcity of food or a situation where there is not enough food for people to eat. Nearly every continent in the world has experienced a period of famine throughout history. Many countries continue to have extreme cases of famine. Millions die every year due to starvation. Most of famine cases nowadays happen in the African continent such as Somalia, Niger, Ethiopia and Kenya. The World Health Organization estimates that one-third of the world is well-fed, one-third is under-fed one-third is starving. While you're sitting on your couch devouring pizzas and ice cream, at least 200 people is dying from starvation. These statistics are alarming. In this day and age, the 21st century, no one should be hungry or die from starvation. We should be grateful of living in Malaysia, because not a day has gone by in our lives with an empty stomach. Have you ever thrown away your food because you were not able to finish them? Or have you ever complained that your food is not delicious enough? Well, there are others, millions of them who would kill just for a piece of bread. So, think again before you throw away or complain about your food.

Now, let's get back to business. So, what are our social responsibility as human beings to help ease and hopefully end the world hunger? The simplest way is to donate. Find an association, a cause or a mission to help reduce world hunger, such as the World Hunger Relief Malaysia, a campaign by KFC and Pizza Hut. All funds raised are donated to the United Nations World Food Program. Easy, right? You can eat and donate at the same time, killing two birds with one stone. We can also use social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to spread the facts about world hunger and what they can do to help. There are also some games and quizzes online where you can play and donate at the same time. As for the Muslim, we fast every year for a month to help us better understand what some people in other parts of the world are going through, which hopefully will make us more grateful and willing to help those in need.

So, I hope you'll find this post informative and starts to take some action. That's all from me, folks. See you in the next post! Cheerio~
